What is Everything Literacy?
It is a combination of differentiated strategies that target all learning styles. Everything Literacy includes lessons for the low, proficient and advanced leveled learners to insure that everyone is actually learning and being engaged in a way the individual understands best. Literacy strategies are spread throughout the entire learning environment for all learning types. This training is a workshop that we conduct for early childhood educators who teach Pre-K through 3rd grade as well as students with learning disabilities and home school educators. When doing training on site, we conduct a walk-through your learning environment to show you how to incorporate Everything Literacy everywhere in your space.
What are the learning types?
Visual (spatial): You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.
Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music.
Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.
Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people.
Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study.
Why Everything Literacy?
Everything that is learned begins with some type of language, body language, oral language, and written language. We believe that in the absence of literacy, there are limitations on all other learning and understanding. Therefore, teaching must be approached from a literary standpoint first. Everything Literacy is an accumulation of differentiated strategies that strive to do exactly that, teach literacy first throughout the learning environment and across the curriculum.
Where is Everything Literacy used?
Everything Literacy is not just used in the classroom. It is used during lunch, on the playground, while students are waiting for the restroom, and during free time. It is spread throughout the environment and is infused in activities and lessons throughout the day. For instance, words from the book of the week are on the floors, walls, in play are, on flashcards, in the learning centers and they go home with the students and are even in the restrooms.
